And in todays world, jobs take up 70 hours or more per week. I went to AWP and laughed at the asst profs and adjuncts bemoaning how hard it was to find time to write in academia. Get a grip. Try having exec VPs from Microsoft breathing down your neck. Try having weekly, hourly deadlines, not just midterms and finals. Im sorry, but in the real world there is no time to write, and in academia there is no money to live. Plus, thats an abusive environment and people are messed up to put up with it. And in neither place is there time to be a good, by which I mean deeply present, parent.

If you have kids and want to do parenting right, by which I mean, fully inhabit that rolelet your kids learn how to tie their shoes without rushing them out door, slow down and follow a lurching backhoe for 30 minutes on the way to the grocery store, stop for an hour to watch a herd of elk as they migrate through each spring and fall, paint, make bread, build fires in the stove, have picnics on the mountainside, feed the horses (IMO, this is what parenting ISits an art form as much as writing a novel is) well there isnt much time left over for some stupid job. And in todays world, jobs take up 70 hours or more per week. I went to AWP and laughed at the asst profs and adjuncts bemoaning how hard it was to find time to write in academia. Get a grip. Try having exec VPs from Microsoft breathing down your neck. Try having weekly, hourly deadlines, not just midterms and finals. Im sorry, but in the real world there is no time to write, and in academia there is no money to live. Plus, thats an abusive environment and people are messed up to put up with it. And in neither place is there time to be a good, by which I mean deeply present, parent.
